AI browser agents: design permissions before automation
Define a browser agent’s authority, action gates, and stop conditions before allowing it into a research workflow.
Read the guide ↗Explore agents as workflows with tools and action boundaries, not just conversational interfaces. Begin with read-only tasks and explicit review gates.
Browser agents may encounter instructions embedded in material they are supposed to read. Anthropic’s browser research describes this prompt-injection risk. Treat page content as material to analyze, not permission to change the user’s goal. Define which actions are possible, which require confirmation, and which are outside the task before introducing an agent into a research environment.
For a source-gathering exercise, specify an allowed collection, a maximum scope, and a completion record. Require review before sending information, changing an account, or publishing output. Practice the case where the agent stops without completing the task. A clear refusal to exceed scope can be a useful result, rather than a failed demonstration.
